There are two models of rotary screw air compressors on the market today: oil-injected and oil-free. This process is sometimes known as an “oil bath” or “oil-flooded” lubricated compression. Oil-free rotary air compressors, on the other hand, do not flood their compression chambers with oil; rather, they operate at high speeds and very high temperatures with a dynamic seal and multi-staging to achieve respectable efficiencies.
Oil-injected compressors will require more routine maintenance, but will have a lower total cost of ownership as compared to an oil-free screw compressor.
